"This is digitization", they said, "an awesome new tool for the middle class society!"
What they didn't know: digitization ended the middle class society.
Digitization is not a bunch of new tools and platforms for old ideas and institutions. It replaces them with new ideas, dreams, social meaning and structures.
When the printing press was invented in the 1440s, all the monks got excited:
"This is lit", they said, "we are going to copy bibles faster than ever before!"
What they didn't know: the printing press wasn’t a tool for the religious age. It ended feudalism and enabled the civic society of mass media, democracy and capitalism...
